Romney: 'SNL' 'Sounds Like a Lot of Fun'

If the producers of Saturday Night Live want Mitt Romney to appear on their show, he has but one request -- it had better be funny.

In an exclusive interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer, Romney denied he had already been approached to appear on the show, but said he thought a gig on sketch show sounded "like a lot of fun."

Romney said he was still deciding whether to appear SNL, which almost weekly skewers the presumptive GOP nominee.

"I haven't made a decision on that, just heard about it," he told "World News" anchor Diane Sawyer in an exclusive interview today when asked about the show's invite. "Of course it would depend on the nature of the skit. I want it to be funny."

Romney said he enjoys SNL comedian Jason Sudeikis' slick-haired impersonation and even sets his DVR to record it.

"He's very good, Jason's very good," Romney said of the SNL veteran.

Sudeikis has portrayed Romney since last summer, interpreting the former Massachusetts governor as buttoned up and stiff. In one sketch, Romney promises to go "raw and unleashed" and then just opens the button of his suit jacket.

Romney is not opposed to some good natured self mockery. Last December he appeared on "The Late Show with David Letterman," introducing himself during a Top Ten List with the phrase: "What's up, gangstas? It's the M-I-double tizzle."

Romney, known in his family as a practical joker, dodged Sawyer's question as to whether he believed he was funnier than President Obama.

"I have no idea how funny he is in real life," Romney said of the president.

Romney said he honed his sense of humor around the dinner table with his five sons.

"Most of our dinner table events were involving humor of one kind or another, most of which can't be repeated on the air," he said.

A New Jersey company that hires staff for the information technology industry is fighting charges that it fired a receptionist who complained the company favored hiring immigrants over American workers.

The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit late Tuesday on behalf of an unnamed worker who was fired by Whiz International, a Jersey City company that describes itself as offering staffing and information technology services to "small, mid-size and large corporations throughout the globe."

STORY:  States grapple with immigration enforcement

According to the lawsuit, the receptionist was responsible for recruiting potential workers and to maintain a list of applicants that included their nationality and visa status. The suit says she was later told that the company preferred hiring workers on temporary visas because "they would be tied to (Whiz International) and it would be difficult for them to obtain other employment."

The receptionist voiced her discomfort with that screening process, and how it would hurt American workers applying for similar positions -- and the company's response was a termination letter, according to the lawsuit.

"Employers cannot punish employees who try to do the right thing and take reasonable measures to shed light on a practice they believe may be discriminatory," Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez said in a statement. "Employers must ensure that their practices conform to the anti-discrimination provision of the (Immigration and Nationality Act), and retaliation will not be tolerated."

Whiz International officials did not return requests for comment.

The lawsuit comes as the immigration debate continues raging in Congress, on the presidential campaign trail, and in state capitals and cities across the country.

The number of people immigrating from Mexico halted or actually reversed for the first time in 2010, according to the Pew Hispanic Center. But states like Alabama continue passing tough laws cracking down on illegal immigrants in their states. That has created a legal challenge, with the U.S. Supreme Court expected to rule next month on a battle between Arizona and the Department of Justice over how much states can assist in immigration enforcement.

Obama again struggles in southern primaries

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Two more southern primaries, two more eyebrow-raising performances by President Obama.

Obama carried only 58% of the vote in yesterday's Kentucky Democratic primary -- against 42% for "uncommitted" delegates to the national convention; "uncommitted" actually outpolled the president in 67 of Kentucky's 120 counties.

Obama also carried 58% in the Arkansas primary; little-known Tennessee lawyer and Occupy Wall Street supporter John Wolfe won 42% of the vote against the Democratic president in Arkansas.

Two weeks ago, a federal prisoner in Texas named Keith Judd racked up 41% of the vote against Obama in the West Virginia primary.

Of course, there are reasons for these kinds of returns. Few Democrats are voting in these primaries where Obama faces only token opposition; only protest voters are truly motivated.

There's also the fact that Obama is an underdog to Republican candidate Mitt Romney in the states of Kentucky, Arkansas and West Virginia; Obama lost all three in 2008 to John McCain.

Another potential factor: Race.

The Washington Post reports:

One easy explanation -- and the one regularly espoused by some Democrats -- for Obama's struggles in Appalachia and portions of the South is simply that some white voters will not vote for an African American for president.

But although no one doubts that race may be a factor, exit polling suggests that the opposition to Obama goes beyond it.

And seasoned political observers who have studied the politics of these areas say race may be less of a problem for Obama than the broader cultural disconnect that many of these voters feel with the Democratic Party.

"Race is definitely a factor for some Texans but not the majority," said former congressman Charles W. Stenholm (D-Tex.). "The most significant factor is the perception/reality that the Obama administration has leaned toward the ultra-left viewpoint on almost all issues."

CAIRO (AP) – More than 15 months after autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak's ouster, Egyptians streamed to polling stations Wednesday to freely choose a president for the first time in generations. Waiting hours in line, some debated to the last minute over their vote in a historic election pitting old regime figures against ascending Islamists.

A man walks by posters of Muslim Brotherhood presidential candidate in Cairo, Egypt, Tuesday, May 22. The May 23-24 presidential election marks the first time Egyptians will choose their leader in a race overseen by international monitors.

A sense of amazement at having a choice pervaded the crowds in line, along with fervent expectation over what direction a new leader will take a country that has been in turmoil ever since mass protests toppled the man who ruled with an iron fist for nearly 30 years.

Some backed veterans of Mubarak's regime, believing they can bring stability after months of rising crime, a crumbling economy and bloody riots. Others were horrified by the thought, believing the "feloul" — or "remnants" of the regime — will keep Egypt locked under autocracy and thwart democracy.

Islamists, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood, saw their chance to lead a country where they were repressed for decades and to implement their version of Islamic law. Their critics recoiled, fearing theocracy.

"You can't tell me, 'Vote for this or else you're a sinner!'" Wael Ramadan argued with another man in line at a polling station in the impoverished Cairo neighborhood of Basateen. "We never said that," protested the man. "Yes, you did," Ramadan shot back.

"The revolution changed a lot. Good things and bad things," Ramadan, a 40-year-old employee at a mobile phone company, said afterward. "The good thing is all this freedom. We are here and putting up with the trouble of waiting in line for electing a president. My vote matters. It is now a right … Now we want a president that has a vision."

A field of 13 candidates is running in the voting Wednesday and Thursday. The two-day first run is not expected to produce an outright winner, so a runoff between the two top vote-getters will be held June 16-17. The winner will be announced June 21. Around 50 million people are eligible to vote.

An Islamist victory will likely mean a greater emphasis on religion in government. The Muslim Brotherhood, which already dominates parliament, says it won't mimic Saudi Arabia and force women to wear veils or implement harsh punishments like amputations. But it says it does want to implement a more moderate version of Islamic law, which liberals fear will mean limitations on many rights.

Many of the candidates have called for amendments in Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel, which remains deeply unpopular. None is likely to dump it, but a victory by any of the Islamist or leftist candidates in the race could mean strained ties with Israel and a stronger stance in support of the Palestinians in the peace process. The candidates from the Mubarak's regime — and, ironically, the Brotherhood, which has already held multiple talks with U.S. officials — are most likely to maintain the alliance with the United States.

The real election battle is between four front-runners.

The main Islamist contenders are Mohammed Morsi of the powerful Brotherhood and Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh, a moderate Islamist whose inclusive platform has won him the support of some liberals, leftists and minority Christians.

The two secular front-runners are both veterans of Mubarak's regime — former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq and former foreign minister Amr Moussa.

The winner will face a monumental task. The economy has been sliding as the key tourism industry dried up — though it starting to inch back up. Crime has increased. Labor strikes have proliferated.

And the political turmoil is far from over. The military, which took power after Mubarak's fall on Feb. 11, 2011, has promised to hand over authority to the election winner by the end of June. But many fear it will try to maintain a considerable amount of political say. The fundamentals of Mubarak's police state remain in place — including the powerful security forces. The generals have said they have no preferred candidate, but they are widely thought to be favoring Shafiq, a former air force commander.

"We will have an elected president but the military is still here and the old regime is not dismantled," said Ahmed Maher, a prominent activist from the group April 6, a key architect of last year's 18-day uprising that toppled Mubarak.

"But the pressure will continue. We won't sleep. People have finally woken up. Whoever the next president is, we won't leave him alone," he said outside a polling center in Cairo.

Moreover, the country must still write a new constitution. That was supposed to be done already, but was delayed after Islamists tried to dominate the constitution-writing panel, prompting a backlash that scuttled the process for the moment.

The Muslim Brotherhood is hoping a Morsi victory in the presidency will cap their political rise, after parliament elections last year gave them nearly half of the legislature's seats.

In the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, microbuses run by the Brotherhood ferried women supporters to the polls in the poor neighborhood of Abu Suleiman, one of the group's strongholds. The women, in conservative headscarves or covered head to toe in black robes and veils that hid their faces, filed into the station.

"I want to give the Brotherhood a chance to rule," said Aida Ibrahim, a veteran Brotherhood member who was helping voters find their station. "If it doesn't work, they will be held accountable," she said.

The secular young generation that launched the anti-Mubarak uprising has been at a loss in the race, with no solid candidate reflecting its views.

In Cairo, 27-year-old Ali Ragab said he was voting for a leftist candidate, Hamdeen Sabahi — because the poor "should get a voice," but he admitted Sabahi didn't stand much of a chance.

He said his father and all his father's friends were backing Shafiq "because they think he's a military man who will bring back security. I'm afraid Shafiq would mean another Mubarak for 30 more years."

For most of his 29-year rule, Mubarak — like his predecessors — ran unopposed in yes-or-no referendums. Rampant fraud guaranteed ruling party victories in parliamentary elections. Even when, in 2005, Mubarak let challengers oppose him in elections, he ended up not only trouncing his liberal rival but jailing him.

The election comes less than two weeks before a court is due to issue its verdict on Mubarak, 84, who has been on trial on charges of complicity in the killing of some 900 protesters during the uprising against his rule. He also faced corruption charges, along with his two sons, one-time heir apparent Gamal and wealthy businessman Alaa.

The sense of being able to make a choice — and having that choice mean something — was overwhelming for some.

"I can die in a matter of months, so I came for my children, so they can live," a tearful Medhat Ibrahim, 58, who suffers from cancer, said as he waited to vote in a poor district south of Cairo. "We want to live better, like human beings."

More than four hours after the polls opened, there have been no reports of major violence or irregularities. Before dawn, a policeman in a police car parked outside a polling center in northern Cairo was killed by a stray bullet when a nearby argument over a taxi fare turned into a gunfight, according to security officials speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. Policemen assigned to the protection of the center exchanged fire with the men, wounding and capturing one of them.

"May God help the new president," said Zaki Mohammed, a teacher in his 40s as he waited to vote in a district close to the Giza Pyramids. "There will be 82 million pairs of eyes watching him."

Long commute time linked with poor health, new study shows

New evidence shows that a long commute by car not only takes hours out of your day, but could take years off your life.

A study published this month in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that the longer people drive to work, the more likely they are to have poor cardiovascular health.

"This is the first study to show that people who commute long distances to work were less fit, weighed more, were less physically active and had higher blood pressure," said Christine M. Hoehner, a public health professor at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the study's lead author. "All those are strong predictors of heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers."

The study monitored the health of 4,297 adults from 12 counties in Texas, a metropolitan region where 90 percent of people commute to work by car, Hoehner said.

The New York area has the longest average commuting time -- almost 35 minutes -- of any metropolitan area, according to the Census Bureau in its analysis of the 2009 American Community Survey. But the other nine metro areas in the top 10 also averaged a half hour or more. And even the area with the shortest average commute, Great Falls, Mont., still clocked in at 14 minutes.

That's important because those who commuted by car 10 miles or more each way were more likely to have high blood pressure than people who drove shorter distances. And those who traveled 15 or more miles each way were more likely to have bigger waistlines and less likely to be physically active, according to Hoehner's study.

Tom Ricci, 53, drives 130 miles round trip each day from his home in Mahopac, N.Y., to his job at a music record company in Lyndhurst, N.J.

He gets up at 4:30 a.m. almost every day to hit the gym before work.

"I'd go crazy and lose my mind" without a workout routine, Ricci said. "You need a release from that grind."

Diet, exercise and sleep habits were not looked at in the study, Hoehner said. They also can also contribute to obesity and high blood pressure.

Christine Bruno of Garrison, N.Y., feels the difference. Her commute used to be 7 minutes. Now since she moved in with her fiance it take up to 90 minutes each way to make the 40-mile trek to New Rochelle, N.Y.

"By the time you finish your final meal of the day, there is no time to do much else," said Bruno, 40. "There is no time to exercise. And there is no time to go to the gym, and it's a huge issue, because I used to be a gym rat."

Danielle Mahoney, 36, lives in Patterson, N.Y., works in Suffern, N.Y., and commutes 126 miles round trip a day. Her company offers fitness classes to employees several times a week so they can exercise during the day. Without them, Mahoney said, she wouldn't have time for the gym, especially with twin toddlers at home.

The hours she spends in her car are "definitely draining," she said.

"If it's a longer day or you didn't get enough sleep, you can doze when you are driving," she said. "Numerous times I catch myself."

Dr. Franklin Zimmerman, a cardiologist and director of critical care at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., said what makes long commutes by car even worse is that many people are also sitting at work.

He tells patients to get 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise each day. If people can't get to the gym, he suggests they park their cars farther from their offices and then walk. People can also sneak in exercise by getting off the elevator and taking the stairs.

"It's OK to split it up into increments," he said. "It's hard to find 30 minutes, but it's not hard to find five minutes, and all of that still counts."

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich's collection of enterprises, known as Newt Inc., are in financial shambles following his run for president, according to an extensive review of Gingrich's post-campaign finances by Reuters.

Gingrich Productions, the entity owned by wife Callista Gingrich, is currently awaiting a decision in an Atlanta bankruptcy court that will determine whether a promissory note from a former Gingrich holding will be paid.

"The bankrupt corporation is the Center for Health Transformation whose revenues came from the hefty dues paid by corporations for assistance in formulating and promoting certain health care policies," Reuters reports.

When Gingrich left the Center for Health Transformation last May his three partners bought him out for $6.4 million -- an amount that would be paid to the former speaker in $100, 000 installments.

The promissory note, that Reuters reports will likely go unpaid, was the largest asset listed by Gingrich in the financial disclosure reports filed last year.

The Gingrich GOP campaign reported $4.8 million in debt, including $1 million owed to a private jet company, in Federal Election Commission filings last week.

By Don Juan Moore, AP

Florida A&M Drum Major Robert Champion performs during halftime of a football game in 2011. Prosecutors in Orlando are releasing thousands of documents in Champion's hazing death.

Robert Champion, 26, had asked all season to go through the hazing ritual, known as "crossing over," defendant Jonathan Boyce said.

"It's a respect thing, you know," Boyce told detectives. "Well, he was wanting to do it all … all season."

Champion died last November after enduring a hazing ritual conducted by other band members on a bus outside a hotel in Orlando where FAMU had played its archrival in football. His death revealed a culture of hazing in the famed band, which has performed at Super Bowls and presidential inauguration parades. An autopsy concluded Champion suffered blunt trauma blows to his body and died from shock caused by severe bleeding.

Champion's parents have said their son was a vocal opponent of the routine hazing in the band.

In an interview earlier this year, Champion's father, Robert Sr., said the reason his son was hazed was because of his opposition to it.

Prosecutors in Orlando on Wednesday released more than 2,300 pages of documents in the hazing death of Champion last year. Thirteen people have been charged, including 11 who are charged with a third-degree felony and two who are charged with misdemeanors.

The documents mainly consist of transcripts of interviews with the 11 defendants in the felony hazing case as well as other witnesses. Among the documents are hundreds of pages of redacted student records.

One hazing ritual called "the hot seat" involved getting kicked and beaten with drumsticks and bass drum mallets while covered with a blanket on a band bus called "Bus C," band member Marc Baron told investigators. Baron isn't charged and wasn't on the bus the weekend Champion died.

Band members enduring the hazing also must run a gauntlet to the back of the bus while being hit and kicked in a ritual called "crossing over," he said.

"You start in the beginning and you go, you try to find your way to the back," Baron said.

Asked by investigator if it was how a member earns respect, Baron said: "In a certain way respect, but it's not really respect. It's just like band credentials."

Documents show that Champion was the third band member to "cross over" Bus C. One female band member went first, followed by a male band member.

Shawn Turner, one of the 11 defendants, told police he and another of the defendants, Jonathan Boyce, did not haze Champion and were actually trying to help him reach the back of the bus.

Turner told investigators Boyce had to pull Jessie Baskin off Champion to stop him from kicking. Turner added that he and Caleb Jackson got into a fight because Jackson was holding Champion back. Baskin and Jackson are among those charged.

Jackson, who was already on probation for a battery charge from 2010, was the only one of the 11 who was denied bail.

He told police that he did not hit Champion. He said he simply stood in Champion's way so he could not make it to the back of the bus.

Defendant Aaron Golson denied getting on the bus where the hazing took place. He said he got a ride back from the game with a friend.

"I don't know anything that happened with Robert," Golson said.

Golson also told detectives that Champion wasn't into the hazing rituals.

"Man, I'm shock(ed) if that happens," Golson said when told that Champion chose to get on the bus to be hazed.

The documents show that Jackson at first told detectives that he wasn't on the bus when Champion was beaten but then changed his story when he was told that hotel video surveillance showed him getting off the bus.

"I love Robert like a brother, more than ya'll, any, everybody in this band loves this man like a brother, you know what I'm saying," Jackson said.

FAMU's famed Marching 100 band was suspended shortly after the incident, and officials have said it will remain sidelined at least through the 2012-2013 school year.

The school also tried to fire band director Julian White. White's dismissal was placed on hold while the criminal investigation unfolded, but he insisted that he did nothing wrong and fought for months to get reinstated. He announced his retirement earlier this month.

The 11 defendants, which include three fellow FAMU drum majors and three band members who were not enrolled in the university's required band course, are scheduled to make their first court appearance and enter their pleas before Circuit Judge Marc L. Lubet June 14 at the Orange County Courthouse. The 10 men and one woman face a maximum six-year prison sentence if convicted of the third-degree felony charge.

Military planners want to make bases worldwide more walkable

By Ted S. Warren, AP

Guards check the identification of drivers passing through a gate at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

At military installations, suburban-style sprawl is out and walkable communities are in, under new Defense Department planning guidelines.

The guidelines, released this week, call for "compact development" that incorporates mass transit and a mix of residential housing close to shops and other businesses. Energy conservation is a key goal; trees and other greenery should be considered as well.

It's "about doing things more efficiently so we can preserve land for future missions," said Dorothy Robyn, deputy undersecretary of Defense for installations and environment. "We think it will improve quality of life, but for us it's also about doing our jobs better."

She spoke at a forum sponsored by the National Capital Planning Commission and George Mason University.

The stakes are large. The Defense Department has more than 300,000 buildings encompassing 2.2 billion square feet. That physical footprint is about three times the size of Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

But if the Pentagon excels at natural land management — its enormous holdings provide habitat to many at-risk species — it hasn't done so well in shaping the installations where hundreds of thousands of service members and their families live.

"We have not had a good master planning process," Robyn said. Many bases are "very sprawling, very auto-centric. You have to have to have a car to get around."

Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., for example, has 70,000 parking spaces, even though its daily population never exceeds 40,000, she said.

The military has exported that model overseas. At Aviano Air Base, Italy, it can take up to an hour to drive to the commissary from family housing areas, said Mark Gillem, a consultant and associate professor of architecture at the University of Oregon.

In development for 18 months, the new guidelines apply to all installation master planning and represent the first thorough rewrite of the Pentagon's policy in a quarter-century.

The Defense Department, like other federal agencies, is already under orders from the White House to curb energy use throughout its operations and emphasize sustainable development. The new guidelines build on those requirements, but portray other benefits as well.

Transit-oriented development, for example, reduces traffic congestion and lowers the accident rate, the document states. It also promotes healthy communities by encouraging more walking and bicycling.

The military has already been trying out some of the new approaches at installations as diverse as Lewis-McChord and Fort Hood, Texas, Gillem said.

"Those (Hood) folks are very interested," he said. "If you can do it at Fort Hood, you can do it anywhere."

Kidnapped Texas boy not ready to meet parents

HOUSTON (AP) – A Houston boy kidnapped eight years ago is still not ready to meet his parents after being in foster care since authorities found him in March, Texas child welfare officials said Wednesday during a court hearing.

Auboni Champion-Morin waits outside a juvenile courtroom on March 15 in Houston. Her son, Miguel Morin, was found after vanishing eight years ago with his babysitter.

Officials with Child Protective Services told state District Judge Mike Schneider that a therapist who has been working with 8-year-old Miguel Morin believes the boy is not yet ready to be told who his parents are or to have visits with them. Authorities allege Miguel was taken as an infant, and his baby sitter and her mother are now jailed on kidnapping charges.

The boy will remain in the state's care at least until a Sept. 12 hearing, said Estella Olguin, a spokeswoman for CPS in Houston.

"His parents have gotten photographs (of the boy) and bought him toys and clothes to be given to a caseworker to provide to him," Olguin said.

CPS officials said there are a few options for Miguel's living arrangements: He could be reunited with his parents Auboni Champion-Morin and Fernando Morin, live with another family member or live with a Houston couple who are taking care of the Morins' four other children under an agreement between the couples.

Olguin said CPS plans to conduct a review of the home of Juanita and Joseph Aguillard, where the Morins' other children, ages 7 to 14, are living, to see if it would be a good environment for Miguel. Juanita Aguillard said she had a bed ready for Miguel in case he comes to live in her home.

Mark Cooper, an attorney for Miguel's father, said the boy's parents "are holding up well."

"They are understanding of the process and they are engaged in their therapy," Cooper said. Judge Schneider had previously ordered Miguel and his parents to undergo therapy.

Olguin said the Morins, who live in Houston and are both 29, are being cooperative with child welfare officials.

"They are going to group counseling, couple's counseling. They are attending meetings with CPS and other family members to come up with a plan for Miguel and see what's in his best interest," she said.

The boy has been in foster care since authorities found him in March living in East Texas with Krystle Tanner, who had been Miguel's baby sitter in Houston. Investigators believe she kidnapped the boy in 2004 when he was just 8 months old and concealed his identity for years.

Tanner and her mother, Gloria Walker, each have been charged with kidnapping and injury to a child. They have pleaded not guilty and remain jailed in San Augustine, about 140 miles northeast of Houston.

Authorities allege Tanner and her mother hid Miguel in homes in Central and East Texas, kept him out of school and didn't call him by his given name, instead renaming him Jaquan. The boy, not knowing his true identity, called Tanner his mother and Walker grandmother, investigators said.

Will GOP domestic violence bill hurt party with Hispanics?

AppId is over the quota

WASHINGTON – The House of Representatives approved its version of the Violence Against Women Act on Wednesday, and some GOP strategists worry that it could further hurt the party's standing with Hispanics even as they try to court the ever-growing voting bloc.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi gestures during a news conference on Capitol Hill on Wednesday to discuss the Democrats' fight with Republicans over the Violence Against Women Act.

The House bill adds new requirements to illegal immigrants who claim to be victims of domestic violence. In an election season that has seen Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush call on the GOP to soften its tone against immigrants, GOP strategist Lionel Sosa worries that the Republican-authored House bill will lead to attack ads and further damage their standing among Hispanic voters.

"It certainly could become a wedge issue, and something that could be used against (Republican nominee Mitt) Romney," said Sosa, who served as a Hispanic media consultant to Republican presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush and advised the failed presidential campaigns of John McCain and Newt Gingrich.

Sosa cautioned that voters are able to make the distinction between actions taken by members of the party and those of Romney himself. But Democrats view the House version of the Violence Against Women Act as the latest example of a party that continues to doom itself with Hispanic voters.

"There's been some truly alarming, unacceptable rhetoric about immigrants and immigration status in the last year or two," Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said of Republicans. "Some of the wiser members of the (GOP) are beginning to realize that that will hurt them electorally broadly."

The Violence Against Women Act — first passed in 1994 and now up for a reauthorization this year — allows illegal immigrants who are victims of domestic violence at the hands of legal permanent residents or U.S. citizens to apply for an emergency visa if they assist in prosecutions against their abusers.

The Senate version of the bill passed in April and increased the number of those emergency visas, known as U visas, from 10,000 to 15,000. The bill passed with 16 Republicans voting for it.

The House version of the bill does not include the added visas, and Republicans worried about potential fraud in the process and the ability of visa recipients to bring relatives into the country have added more requirements for illegal immigrants seeking the visa.

For example, the House version allows immigration officials to interview the accused abuser, instead of solely relying on statements from law enforcement and the victim. Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., said that would automatically "tip off" the abuser, who could then proceed to continue harming the victim.

"Currently, there are no safeguards in place to prevent fraud or to prevent an immigrant from fabricating tales of spousal abuse," said Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, during a hearing last week. "Increasing the cap will simply lead to further expansion of a program that is running out of control."

Republicans and Democrats debating the bill on the House floor Wednesday both accused the other side of politicizing what has long been a bipartisan proposal.

Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo. called it "horrifying to see the political posturing" of House Republicans who didn't follow the Senate's lead and include protections for Native American women and the lesbian, gay and transgender community.

Rep. Sandy Adams, R-Fla., who has suffered from domestic abuse and sponsored the bill, said the House bill doubles funds to process rape kits and cuts down on fraud, and told opponents "we cannot allow domestic violence in this country to become a campaign issue."

President Obama weighed in before the House even voted, threatening a veto if the House version of the bill reached his desk.

Estranged wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. found dead

BEDFORD, New York (AP) – Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s estranged wife, Mary Richardson Kennedy, who had fought drug and alcohol problems, was found dead at the family property Wednesday.

An autopsy for the 52-year-old was scheduled for Thursday, and no cause of death had been released.

In a statement issued by Robert Kennedy Jr.'s chief of staff, the family said Mary Kennedy, an architect, "inspired our family with her kindness, her love, her gentle soul and generous spirit."

"Mary was a genius at friendship, a tremendously gifted architect and a pioneer and relentless advocate of green design who enhanced her cutting edge, energy efficient creations with exquisite taste and style," the family said.

The former Mary Richardson, a longtime connection of the Kennedy clan, married Robert Kennedy Jr., a prominent environmental lawyer and the son of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy, in 1994. The couple had four children, the youngest born in July 2001. Robert Kennedy Jr. also has two children from a previous marriage.

Mary Kennedy also was a designer and had overseen the renovation of the couple's home into an environmentally advanced showpiece. Her family cited her devotion to her children in remembering her.

"We deeply regret the death of our beloved sister Mary, whose radiant and creative spirit will be sorely missed by those who loved her," the family said in a statement issued by attorney Kerry Lawrence, who had represented her in a drunken-driving case. "Our heart goes out to her children who she loved without reservation."

Neighbor Leslie Lampert, who owns the Cafe of Love restaurant a short drive from the Kennedy home, said Mary Kennedy was "at all times just a lovely individual."

"She was community oriented," Lampert said. "She was always kind in our presence."

Another neighbor, Kim Fraioli, a trauma therapist who lives a few houses down from the Kennedys, said the family was private.

"We left them alone," Fraioli. "We didn't have any interaction. I think it's a tragedy. It's very sad for their family and the surviving children. My heart goes out to the family."

At the home on Wednesday, a red brick mansion with a columned porch entrance set in a heavily wooded acreage, police kept media away.

Mary Richardson had known the Kennedys for years, through her friendship with Robert Kennedy Jr.'s sister, Kerry Kennedy, whom she met at boarding school. She had been Kerry Kennedy's maid of honor at her wedding in 1990.

She had had trouble with drugs and alcohol and had two high-profile arrests around the time her husband filed for divorce in 2010.

Kennedy was first arrested May 15 of that year on a charge of driving while intoxicated after a police officer reported seeing her drive her car over a curb near the family's Bedford home. Her only passenger was a dog, and police said she had a blood-alcohol level of 0.11 percent; the legal limit is 0.08 percent. Her license was suspended.

At the time of her sentencing, famous family and friends spoke out in support of her.

Her mother-in-law, Ethel Kennedy, wrote in a letter that she "is a caring, nourishing mother who has nursed her four children through lifelong bouts of debilitating allergies," according to an account in Westchester's The Journal News at the time.

Kerry Kennedy, in her letter, said, "When I look at my three daughters, my wish for them is that they are as blessed as I have been to have a companion, a confidante, a friend, like Mary Richardson."

Mary Kennedy was charged later that year with driving under the influence of drugs, but that charge was dismissed in July 2011 when a judge said the evidence showed she didn't know the medications she had taken would impair her ability to drive.

There were indications her troubles started earlier. In 2007, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. drove his wife to a hospital for treatment, but she resisted and ran from the car, according to the Journal News, which cited Mount Kisco police records.

"I remember she was acting kind of out of it, kind of crazy," a witness, Rae Kesten, told The Journal News in 2007. "She was running into the street and flailing her arms around. He was trying to restrain her. I didn't know if they were fighting or not, but I was concerned."

The unexpected death of another person connected to the storied Kennedy clan brought to mind the other sorrows the famous family has suffered, including the assassinations of RFK and JFK in the 1960s.

Shopping in Bedford, Diane Glokler said, "I've always just thought that family is very tragic. They keep having tragic things happening to them. It's heart-wrenching."

Glen Campbell serenades Congress at Alzheimer's event

WASHINGTON – Ashley Campbell has the dream of any young musician: to belong to a band making a worldwide tour. Yet her dream has a sad twang to it. Her father is singer Glen Campbell, who went public last June with his diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

By Jack Gruber,, USA TODAY

Glen Campbell takes the stage with daughter Ashley at the Library of Congress in Washington for Wednesday night's performance, hosted by the Alzheimer's Association.

Campbell, 75, has spent the past year trying to raise awareness about the disease, an incurable, brain-wasting illness that affects 5.4 million people in the USA. That number is expected to triple as the Baby Boomers age.

Ashley Campbell, 25, and two of her siblings have joined their dad onstage as his backup band during his Goodbye Tour. The band was back together here Wednesday night at the Library of Congress for a special performance for members of Congress, put on by the Alzheimer's Association to raise awareness about the disease.

"I think music is therapeutic for him," says Ashley, who plays banjo in the band. "He's definitely sharper when he's on tour than if he's sitting home or playing golf. That's when I see him slipping. But if he can put that guitar in his hands and use his fingers to pick music, he's much better.

"Sometimes he'll get confused when he's singing and might forget some lyrics, but that's when the teleprompter helps him out. And he's not the only musician to use one of those. Not by far."

Ashley says her dad loves the crowds at the concerts — and the feeling seems to be mutual.

"The first night of the tour, I couldn't get over it," she says. "He got the rowdiest standing ovation when he came onstage. People were so supportive of him. I thought maybe it was just because it was the first night.

"Until the next night, when it happened again. And the next night, and the next night."

She says that at a concert before they came to Washington, her dad started singing Rhinestone Cowboy, and a man approached the stage from the crowd.

"He shouted, 'You are a hero, Glen. You are a hero, man.' "

Ashley says music was always part of their household when she was growing up. She played piano and guitar until she got to college. Then she discovered the banjo and bluegrass music.

"Banjo is my instrument now," she says. "When I would play at home, my dad would stand up and say, 'Well, look at you. You're really good on that. You are fantastic.' "

He asks her to invite her friends over, and they play bluegrass music together.

Before the Library of Congress performance, she talked about how important it is for her father to keep doing what he enjoys and to help spread the word about the need to find a cure for Alzheimer's.

"People like Glen Campbell and (basketball coach) Pat Summitt, who are using their voices to advocate for the disease, know it's not going to help them," but it may help others, says Angela Geiger, chief strategy officer for the Alzhiemer's Association. "That takes a special kind of courage."

The sound of courage Wednesday night rocked a jammed auditorium that holds several hundred.

The audience stood and cheered when Campbell came out onstage.

"Thank you," he responded. "I appreciate all of you."

Then he broke into one of his famous songs, Gentle on My Mind, and sang about the "rivers of my mind."

A guitar lick he hit to perfection sent the audience into loud applause again.

"It's important for people to know you can keep doing what you want, that life doesn't end right away when you get Alzheimer's," Ashley says.

Backstage, the adulation continued as Campbell signed autographs.

The Goodbye Tour continues through July.

Chen's departure followed month of international intrigue

Chen Guangcheng's escape from the grips of Chinese authorities represents the culmination of a nearly month-long tale of international intrigue combining car chases along the streets of Beijing with international diplomacy at the highest levels of the world's two most important nations.

AP

Chen Guangcheng is seen earlier this month in a file photo released by the U.S. Embassy Beijing press office.

For weeks since Chen's April 22 escape from house arrest in his home province of Shandong, U.S. officials have been reluctant to speak on the record about his ordeal. Chen spent several days in safe houses, then six days at the U.S. embassy in Beijing before being admitted to a local hospital.

Saturday morning the blind legal activist was taken from the Beijing hospital and put on a plane for the United States, where he is scheduled to land early this evening in Newark.

Ealier this month, his U.S. interlocutors bargained for his freedom in China, only to see Chen change his mind and ask to leave the country with his family. The new arrangement — allegedly temporary — calls for Chen, his wife and two children to live in the New York area so he can study law at New York University.

But that wasn't the deal preferred by U.S. officials as they worked with their Chinese government counterparts during the time Chen was holed up in the heavily fortified embassy from April 27 to May 2. Rather, they had worked out a deal for him to move to another province where he could live freely, attend a local university and continue to be a voice of protest inside China.

Chen's case, which overshadowed a two-day conference on U.S.-China relations that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton flew halfway around the world to attend, had all the makings of a Hollywood film in search of a happy ending. He sought to stay in his country, then to leave. He criticized and then applauded U.S. efforts to help him. And he was a master of media attention, reaching out to U.S. reporters and even speaking to congressional hearings by cell phone.

Clinton and her top deputies and embassy officials, led by Ambassador Gary Locke, worked behind the scenes to iron out differences with their Chinese counterparts. Even as she conducted meetings on other subjects with Chinese leaders, including President Hu Jintao, her deputy for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Kurt Campbell, could be seen pounding away on his Blackberry.

U.S. officials described days of emotional talks with Chen and their Chinese counterparts over the self-taught lawyer's future. Chen has been a prominent voice against Chinese policies, including sterilization and abortion to carry out the country's one-child-per-couple policy.

Not since the 1989 demonstrations in Tiananmen Square had China been rocked by such a controversy over its human rights abuses. And not since coming to office had the Obama administration faced such pressure to defend dissidents and stand up to China, including from Republicans and their likely presidential nominee, Mitt Romney.

The United States maintains its most complex geopolitical relationship with China, 40 years after President Richard Nixon swung open the doors to the world's most populous nation.

The Obama administration, like its predecessors, has raised human rights issues with the Chinese at every meeting. But it hasn't taken precedence over economic and security issues as the relationship between the two countries has become more interdependent.

Still, in a Honolulu speech late last year marking what she called "America's Pacific century," Clinton cited Chen's house arrest as an example of China's spotty human rights record.

"When we see reports of lawyers, artists and others who are detained or disappeared, the United States speaks up both publicly and privately," she said.

The case presented the U.S. with a difficult dilemma, but the maturing relationship with China helped, Clinton said in an interview with USA TODAY this week.

"We had a very difficult challenge in dealing with Mr. Chen, which was made I believe more possible of a positive outcome because we had this other set of activities going simultaneously that both of us, the Chinese and the U.S. sides, were invested in," she said.

No tears as Ga. woman sees bacteria-ravaged hands

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) – A Georgia graduate student fighting a rare flesh-eating infection has been looking at her ravaged hands and asking about the damage, all without tears, her father said Wednesday.

AP

Aimee Copeland is fighting to survive a flesh-eating bacterial infection that forced doctors to amputate most of her left leg.

What Aimee Copeland still doesn't know is that doctors plan to amputate her all of her fingers, just as they had to remove most of her left leg in order to save her life.

"Her fingers are basically mummified. The flesh is dead," Andy Copeland said in a phone interview from Doctors Hospital in Augusta more than two weeks after a zip-lining accident left a gash in his daughter's leg that developed into the infection.

Copeland's father said she held one of her hands close to her face Wednesday and asked family members about it. He said they told her "your hands have been damaged … and we're trying to bring back as much of the life into the hands as possible."

"She was well accepting," Andy Copeland said. "No tears or anything."

The 24-year-old student from an Atlanta suburb remains in critical condition as she battles an infection called necrotizing fasciitis. Doctors initially feared they might have to remove her remaining foot and both hands. But her father said she now faces losing only her fingers after two days of treatment using a hyperbaric chamber, in which patients breathe pure oxygen to boost white blood cells and accelerate healing. Flesh on her palms that had been purple was turning pink again, he said.

Copeland's father said she was still unaware of plans to amputate her fingers, an emotional disclosure that will likely require a counselor's help.

"We don't know if she's aware of her (amputated) leg yet," he said. "We're in a don't ask, don't tell policy."

The flesh-eating bacteria, Aeromonas hydrophila, emit toxins that cut off blood flow to parts of the body. The affliction can destroy muscle, fat and skin tissue.

Copeland contracted the infection days after she suffered the deep cut May 1 when the zip line snapped over rocks in the Little Tallapoosa River near the University of West Georgia, where she studies psychology.

The bug is found in warm and brackish waters. Many people exposed to these bacteria don't get sick. When illnesses do occur, it's often diarrhea from swallowing bacteria in the water. Flesh-eating Aeromonas cases are so rare that only a handful of infections have been reported in medical journals in recent decades.

In addition to the damage to her extremities, Copeland is on a respirator and a dialysis machine as her lungs and kidneys recover. Doctors also had to remove much of the skin from her torso to keep the infection from spreading, her father said.

Though still heavily medicated, Copeland has become more alert and communicates with her parents and older sister despite the breathing tube in her throat. Her father said Wednesday doctors were removing that tube and inserting another directly into her trachea to make her more comfortable.

"If they take the tube out, I believe reading her lips is going to be a lot easier," he said. "And she might be able to actually cover the tube up and be able to talk."

Andy Copeland said his daughter has been asking for her cell phone, her laptop and a book to read, but is still in no condition to use any of those things. He said her sister, Paige, has been reading to her from a book on meditation.

CHICAGO (AP) – Three men accused of making Molotov cocktails had been planning to attack President Barack Obama's campaign headquarters, Mayor Rahm Emanuel's home and other targets during this weekend's NATO summit, prosecutors said Saturday.

The three were arrested Wednesday when police raided an apartment on the city's South Side ahead of the two-day meeting.

The arrests came as authorities tightened security throughout the city in preparation for the summit, where delegations from about 60 countries will discuss the war in Afghanistan and European missile defense.

Defense attorneys alleged that the arrests were an effort to scare the thousands of people expected to protest at the gathering of world leaders. They told a judge that undercover police were the ones who brought the Molotov cocktails.

"This is just propaganda to create a climate of fear," defense attorney Michael Duetsch said.

Later, outside the courtroom, Duetsch said two undercover police officers or informants who called themselves "Mo" and "Gloves" were also arrested during the Wednesday raid, and defense attorneys said they later lost track of the two.

"We believe this is all a setup and entrapment to the highest degree," Duetsch said.

From left, Brent Vincent Betterly, 24, of Oakland Park, Fla.; Jared Chase, 24, of Keene, N.H.; and Brian Church, 20, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

The trio was charged with providing material support for terrorism, conspiracy to commit terrorism and possession of explosives.

The suspects were each being held on $1.5 million bond. They apparently came to Chicago late last month to take part in May Day protests. Six others arrested Wednesday in the raid were released Friday without being charged.

Chicago police Lt. Kenneth Stoppa declined to elaborate on the case beyond confirming the charges against the three who were still in custody.

Police identified the suspects as Brian Church, 20, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Jared Chase, 24, of Keene, New Hampshire; and Brent Vincent Betterly, 24. A police spokesman gave Betterly's hometown as Oakland Park, Massachusetts, but no such town exists. There is an Oakland Park, Florida, that is near Fort Lauderdale.

Activist Bill Vassilakis, who said he let the men stay in his apartment, described Betterly as an industrial electrician who had volunteered to help with wiring at The Plant, a former meatpacking facility that has been turned into a food incubator with the city's backing.

Vassilakis said he thought the charges were unwarranted.

"All I can say about that is, if you knew Brent, you would find that to be the most ridiculous thing you've ever heard. He was the most stand-up guy that was staying with me. He and the other guys had done nothing but volunteer their time and energy," he said.

Betterly appears to have a history of minor run-ins with law enforcement.

He was cited for disorderly intoxication in February in Miami-Dade County, Florida, earlier this year , but the case has been dismissed, according to online court records.

Authorities in Oakland Park, Florida, said Betterly and two other young men walked into a public high school last fall after a night of tequila drinking and took a swim in the pool, according to a report in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

They allegedly stole fire extinguishers from three school buses, discharged one and smashed a cafeteria window with another. The vandalism caused about $2,000 in damage. Betterly was charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief, the newspaper said.

Chase grew up in Keene, New Hampshire, and moved to Boston a few years ago before becoming active in the Occupy movement, said his aunt, Barbara Chase of Westmoreland, New Hampshire.

She said she was stunned to learn of the charges against her nephew.

"That surprised me because he's not that dumb, at least I wouldn't have thought so anyway," said Barbara Chase, a factory worker. "He always seemed harmless, but who knows? Outside influences sometimes can sway people to do things that they normally wouldn't do."

Jared Chase's father, Steve Chase, died about five weeks ago after a long struggle with a disease that left him disabled, Barbara Chase said. The family had been waiting for him to come home before having a funeral.

Downtown streets were largely empty Saturday, though that is not unusual for a weekend. Security guards stood watch outside many downtown buildings and in some places almost outnumbered pedestrians.

By mid-afternoon, hundreds of protesters marched from a park to the mayor's house, stopping traffic along the way. Police with bicycles stood guard in front of the Northwest Side home, wearing helmets with face shields.

Some of the protesters sat for a time in the middle of the street. Others climbed trees. One woman carried a sign calling Emanuel a bully for closing mental health clinics and libraries in poor neighborhoods. Others chanted that health care should be a human right.

"We are exercising our power to go and tell him what we want," said N'Dana Carter, who was wearing a hospital gown for the demonstration. "He will hear our message."

A city representative said Emanuel respects the demonstrators' First Amendment constitutional right to freedom of expression.

The bigger show will be on Sunday, the start of the summit, when thousands of protesters are expected to march 2½ miles (four kilometers) from a band shell on Lake Michigan to the McCormick Place convention center, where delegates will be meeting.
