HINTON, Alta. A Via Rail train stranded in Hinton, Alta., for just under 11 hours resumed travelling to Vancouver early Monday.
About 130 passengers were on board the westbound train when it had to stop after CN crews detected breaks in the tracks.
Via spokesman Malcolm Andrews says the westbound trip resumed at 12:17 a.m. ET and the train was not expected to arrive in Vancouver until about 7 p.m. ET.
Andrews earlier said the train had electricity, heat, food and water, and that the passengers were understanding about the delay.
He said track damage is not uncommon at this time of year when rails heat up during the day and cool rapidly when temperatures plunge at night.
Passengers had been waiting further west in Jasper to board the train, and Andrews said Via would pay for the cost of their meals.
