Located about four miles northeast of downtown Vientiane, Phra That Luang or Great Stupa is a symbol of the Lao and the most important monuments in the country. The land was built on sacred ground, one legend states that the Indian King Asoka brought the chest of the Buddha in 307 BC, while others claim that the two dragons live here. Between the 11th and 13th century during an era of power Angkorian Khmer temple is said to have built this place, and Phra That Luang was badly damaged during the invasion of Siam from 1828 and also by lightning strikes in 1896, then restored again in the past five years (1930 to 1935 ).


That Luang is composed of three tiers, each representing a different stage along the path to enlightenment of Buddha. The lowest level, grounded rectangular measuring 68 meters by 69 meters with 323 decorated stones coordination and intersected on all four sides by the gate of prayer, symbolizes the desire of the material world. The second level, measuring 48 meters by 48 meters, which is decorated with 288 rock and 30 coordinating miniature stupa. The middle section consists of a bowl-shaped stupa with base.
